Long D

Edit
You never know unless you try. So let's give it a try.
/Edit

This subject has been on my mind for a while now and I guess since I'm far away from the states right now it's a perfect time to think about it.

I personally don't believe long distance will work or that it's worth it unless you are married or very serious about each other. I just don't understand how it works. You spend each day missing and looking forward to the next time you can use the computer room or when you'll get a call from your significant other. So you live day by day waiting for the chance to just talk to your other and maybe for the weekend to actually be able to hold hands. Doesn't this hinder your interest in getting to know other people and fully experiencing life while you are away from your other? And why is it that you get so dependent on your significant other? It's like you don't know how to let your true self out around others because you are so comfortable with one person.

What really puzzles my mind is that if you really are in love with somebody or depend on them, why would you even be in a situation where there has to be a long distance relationship? I guess there are other uncontrollable factors, but really I think it comes down to people being selfish. Like the husband moves away because he got promoted at work. By taking it he's bettering himself (but also making more money for his family), but also putting his wife or his family in a situation where they can't see him anymore. Where is the line drawn? You want to do what's right for you and the people you love, but if you're not spending time with them or watching your kids grow because you're always away on business trips in order to do 'what's best' is that really the best thing for them?

I guess I'm a type of person who equates time spent with love. It's just so contradicting - when you're not together you miss your other and when you are together there's always that looming fact that the time you guys have together is limited and about to end soon.

Like waiting a month to see your significant other for a week, but then be separated again for a month and a half only to go to completely different schools for the rest of the year.

<-It's like being like this forever.

Anyways, I'm probably just being emotional, selfish, and homesick. Dang what a completely downer entry. What are your thoughts on this subject?

long distance sucks!

my situation: i've been dating this girl for about six months or so. but the last two months we were either in different states or continents (i was in africa). and also, while i was in africa we could e-mail but only talk on the phone about once a week for about 30-40 minutes.

and then starting in a month, i'm going to be in washington, DC and she'll be in california. until december! she might get to visit once.

and, yeah, so, seriously, long distance sucks. and you wonder why you subject yourself to it. and i do drastic things to alleviate it, like i moved to arizona for a month (right now) because she's working here for the summer. So we get to spend the summer in the same town, which is pretty awesome, cuz i'm not gonna see her for about four months.

but, here's my take on it, i guess. i remember before school got out, we knew that if we were going to continue dating there was the possibility of only seeing each other once or twice in about seven months. And we had only been dating for like four. i was thinking it wouldn't be fair for either of us, like you were saying - it would be difficult, and we would be in different places with different people and should we be restrained by having some significant other to crowd our thoughts? we could just let each other be free or whatever, and then when i come back we can either pick up where we left off or not. so we had to think about it, and we talked about it a lot, like a lot a lot, and for some reason it just seemed worth it.

and i have to say, as hard as it's been and as hard as it's going to be, it really is so worth it and I think it all depends on the person. i imagine how well i know lisa now after six months, and thinking that if we had broke it off and then say we start again where we left off when I get back to Pepperdine, i would have had to start getting to know her again starting at like the four month level - it wouldn't be until like, march of 09 that i would know her as well as i do now. and that sucks! i'm really excited to know her at the 15 month level at that point. not at the six month level. or whatever. Because I love getting to know her better and I want to know her better all the time. It almost seems like when there’s this person in the world, who I could be talking to and getting to know better, that not doing it is like wasted time or something… because being with/talking to/getting to know her like, makes me a better person. does that make sense?

i think the only downsides are ones one creates, you know? i mean, as long as one controls their emotions about it, like doesn't just be depressed and pine away for their long-distance lover all the time, and as long as the people involved aren't all possessive and one wouldn't feel constricted at all by the relationship, then i don't think there's any real practical downside, you know? it's obviously ideal to have someone who's around all the time, but when you meet someone who like, captivates/inspires you and is like really awesome, then you have to sacrifice time spent together, i guess, if the situation calls for it.

or something! anyways the point: long distance isn’t ideal, but in some cases the pros and cons are weighed and it’s deemed worth it and that’s why some people do it despite the downsides.

Anyways i just wanted to comment because i haven't talked to you in a long time and i miss you. i hope you're doing well in china! or, taiwan? i don't quite know exactly where you are. :T are you going to be back in c-town this summer? I'm only going to be back for about a week or so in august... if you're around, we should grab a PMT. :)

Be well, connie! Grace & peace
